Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in multiple conversations in the wake of England's loss in the second match of the Ashes versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had stayed in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said Crawley. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia Close of Rapid Ashes Triumph

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on the final day to secure an unassailable 3-0 advantage with three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

This series will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be tough coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in England's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record against the old enemy.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said he. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
